I Knew it Was a Dream, 1976

September 2023

Acrylic, canvas

12”x18”

I had many recurring nightmares as a child. In the midst of one I ran into the bathroom and for some reason grabbed a tube of Crest squeezing it in fear. The toothpaste came out black, and I knew immediately it was a nightmare and woke up. For about a year I was able to wake myself from any dream by finding the bathroom and the Crest, but lost this ability when I got older.
